Splits

The highlight for this week is the two splits we made this week!  A split is when we divide a colony into two or more new colonies.  We took two frames of bee larvae, 3 frames of bees and a frame of honey from hive one and two and placed them in new hives.  We have put newly purchased queens into these hives to make them “queen right” more quickly than if we let the bees do this themselves (that takes about a month).  These two hives have been temporarily moved away from the apiary so that the bees can get used to being a new colony.  In about two weeks, we will return these new colonies to the Apiary.  If everything goes well, we will then have 5 colonies at the end of the season.
